Bulk production and purity control of chiral drugs are severley limited by the complexity and laboriousness of current sensing and resolution techniques. It is possible to overcome these limitations usuing mechanical and optical effects produced by chiral light on chrial molecules and chiral inorganic nanoparticles to develop essentially new concepts of sensing and purification of drug enantiomers. This multidisciplinary project aims at exploiting the recently discovered giant optical activity of chiral inorganic nanoparticles to simplify the analysis of chiral synthetic drugs and unify enantioseperation methods, which can potentially transform the pharmaceutical industry with regard to drug recognition and racemate resolution.
Recently discovered giant optical activity of chiral inorganic nanostructures offers new opportunities for applications beyond the traditional field of molecular systems. These include chiral molecular sensing, seperation and synthesis of enantiomers, super-resolution imaging, nanorobotics, and ultrathin broadband optical components for chiral light. This multidisciplinary project aims to employ the fundamental physical advantages of chiral inorganic nanostructures to develop novel concepts of sensing and seperation of chirality on the nanoscale. The theory will be supported by experimental demonstrations of luminescent sensors of enantiomeric molecules enabling fast quantification of minor impurities in chiral drugs.
