Ionic Molecular Hybrid Liquids

Summary

An opportunity is available for a PhD scholar to undertake research studies into the structure and properties of nano structured ionic-molecular hybrid liquids. The aim of the research is to understand the molecular design rules by which to control the mesoscale structure strongly interacting liquids and concentrated, non-ideal electrolytes.

A complimentary scholarship for this project may be available through a competitive process. To find out more, refer to the Faculty of Science Postgraduate Research Excellence Award and contact Professor Gregory Warr directly.

Synopsis

In this project you will investigate the structure and dynamics of hybrid liquid mixtures designed to mimic and improve upon the desirable physical properties of ionic liquids - low vapour pressure, solubility for a wide range of solute/reagent mixtures, and wide liquid stability range - while improving their environmental friendliness, lowering cost, and improving process performance, especially for large scale applications.

You will utilise a range of neutron and X-ray techniques to probe these liquids on a wide range of length- and time-scales, and use that understanding to improve their design for use as platforms for a variety of complex fluids.
