The University of Sydney Endocrine Surgery Unit based at Royal North Shore Hospital is the largest treatment centre for endocrine diseases of the thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal in Australia.
Our unit seeks to better understand outcomes from endocrine cancers (thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal) and benign disease such as hyperparathyroidism and multinodular goitre and to translate basic science discoveries into the clinic.
Each year our unit, performs over 1,500 endocrine operations and allows the opportunity for multiple clinical studies to address research questions in the care of patients with endocrine pathology.
In addition, our unit is involved with surgical education and training in surgical leadership and professionalism and we seek to better understand and research the impact of these initiatives.
Current projects include:
Lab based: Genomics of Endocrine Cancer, Epigenetics of Advanced Thyroid Cancer
Clinic -based: Outcomes of Medullary Thyroid Cancer, Application of Genomics to Advanced Thyroid Cancer, Outcomes of Parathyroidectomy in Familial Disease, Risk prediction in emergency general surgery.
Projects can be tailored to all levels and we work closely with our colleagues in pathology, endocrinology, oncology, nuclear medicine and radiology as long as we research units at the Kolling Institute of Medical Research and Garvan Institute of Medical Research.
