Anthropology of Christianity

Summary

Ryan Schram is a cultural anthropologist whose research examines the methods by which peoples of Oceania reflexively frame their history and social experiences in terms of narratives of encounter and social change, and the various sites at which these palimpsests of culture are formed, including Christian ritual, formal schooling, oral history, local markets, and development projects.

For several years, he has carried out ethnographic field research in Auhelawa, a society on the south coast of Normanby Island, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. In his dissertation, entitled "Feast of Water: Christianity and the Economic Transformation of a Melanesian Society" (UC San Diego, 2009), Schram argues that Christianity plays an important role in this process by shaping the way people see the relationships between Western and Auhelawa cultures in terms of specific narratives of history.
