Summary

Allen George completed his doctoral thesis in Sociology titled “’Anti-Gay’ Violence, Criminal Justice and Victimhood in New South Wales” (2006), at the University of Newcastle (Australia). Dr George has been a lecturer in Socio-Legal Studies at the University of Sydney since 2009.

Synopsis

Research interests

Allen’s research interest focuses on how LGBTIQ people have gradually been included within the state as citizen with legal and human rights in Australia and globally. Dr George has extensive research experience in this broad area having examined; homosexual advance defence, hate crime against LGBTIQ peoples including the killing of gay/homosexually active men, the introduction of expungement (spent conviction) legislation to remove criminal records for historical homosexual offences, and practices of transitional justice, such as political apologies, to address the past repression and subordination of LGBTIQ communities in liberal democracies. Dr George is currently writing a book on LGBTIQ and the law in Australia for Palgrave Macmillan.

Supervision

Dr George welcomes graduate students interested in examining the historical and contemporary experiences of LGBTIQ people in areas such as critical queer theory, the law, protest and social movements, transitional justice, and human rights.
