A formidable growth of demand for various communication services requires ever-increasing data throughputs. As a result, conventional microwave bands below a frequency of 10 GHz are likely to reach saturation point within just a few years. Therefore, the attention of radio systems designers has been pushed towards ever-higher segments of the frequency spectrum in a quest for increased capacity. The frequency bands 71–76 GHz and 81–86 GHz, known as the E-band, open a large frequency window with low atmospheric attenuation, making them particularly suitable for long-distance wireless transmission. The availability of these ten GHz bandwidth in the E-band, which is about 50 times the bandwidth of the entire current cellular spectrum, brings the possibility of developing the science for gigabit data-rate wireless networks and provides highly reliable transmission over large distances.
