Exploring the complexity of complex (mega) projects

Summary

Owing to unexpected emerging behaviour, interdependencies among participating stakeholders and wider scope, today's projects are becoming more complex. Understanding the complex nature of a given project and make an execution plan accordingly is one of the major required conditions for its successful completion. It is evident from the present project management literature that many projects had become unsuccessful due to the lack in realising the unforeseen complexities of those projects. This research project aims to follow a network approach to address this issue of project management research. A network analysis of project networks can uncover the hidden pattern of relations/interdependencies among stakeholders, and its impact on project performance.

Additional information

In particular, this research project has the following three aims:

  • Identify factors (in relation to scope and objectives of project, and interconnectedness among project stakeholders, etc.) that make a project complex
  • Explore the impact of those factors that make a project complex on project performance and successful completion
  • Develop a strategy for managing interdependencies among project stakeholders for successful project completion
