Investigating the development of infant food allergy in the context of a maternal diet rich in eggs and peanuts during pregnancy and lactation.

Summary

In this study, we will investigate how a maternal diet rich in eggs and peanuts influences the development of food allergies towards these foods. We will explore both innate as well as adaptive immune responses with a specific focus of effector and regulatory T-cell and B-cell responses. We have access to all major immune phenotyping and functional assays.

Synopsis

This study is a multi-site, parallel, two arm (1:1 allocation), single blinded (outcome data assessors, statistical analyst and investigators), randomised controlled trial, funded through the NHMRC (grant ID:1147576). In this part of the study, immune function outcomes will be measured in cord blood and infant blood. We will characterize the immune development in small blood sample volumes and employ methods to assess the effect of the intervention on innate immune responses, effector and regulatory T cell responses and B cell responses at birth and at 4 and 12 months of age
