About Professor Yuan Chen

Yuan’s research passion is to translate the superior properties of carbon nanomaterials into impactful applications, which can create a sustainable future for humans. Yuan is interested in developing synthesis and assembly methodologies and investigating fundamental mechanisms toward the economical production of carbon nanomaterials with well-defined atomic structures for sustainable energy and environmental applications.

His research group is notable for chirality selective synthesis and enrichment of single walled carbon nanotubes. He also carried out pioneer studies to advance scientific knowledge on the antibacterial activity of carbon nanomaterials. He developed an innovative chemical process to synthesize hybrid carbon fibres for capacitive energy storage. This discovery was published in Nature Nanotechnology in 2014, and was reported by more than 100 websites and newspapers. Yuan received his PhD from Yale University in 2005. I published extensively with 4 book chapters, international patents and over 100 peer-reviewed articles. Apart from publications, he serves as an active reviewer for more than 50 international journals and as a research grant reviewer for European Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Energy, Kansas National Science Foundation Program, Israeli Ministry of Science and Technology, Korean National Research Foundation, American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund, Singapore National Research Foundation, and Singapore Ministry of Education. He is an associate editor for CARBON. He received Excellence in Review Awards by CARBON in 2015, Young Scientist Awards by the Singapore National Academy of Science in 2011, Tan Chin Tuan Exchange Fellowship in Engineering in 2010, and JSPS exchange award in 2009. He was also honored for inspirational teaching of Koh Boon Hwee award scholar in 2014 by Nanyang Technological University.
