About Dr Tu Nguyen

I am passionate about geriatric cardiology, cardiovascular pharmacology, frailty and sarcopenia.

My research focuses on the epidemiology and management of cardiovascular diseases in old and frail people. I am also working on cardiovascular pharmacology, frailty and sarcopenia. In addition, I am interested in the epidemiology and management of chronic diseases in older people in low- and middle-income countries. I have a strong collaboration network with researchers and clinicians in the fields of cardiology, geriatrics, primary care and public health in Australia, Canada, Singapore and Vietnam.

I obtained my medical degree from Vietnam, followed by postgraduate training in geriatric medicine (with a focus on geriatric cardiology). I completed my PhD study at the University of Sydney in 2016 with a thesis about the epidemiology and pharmacological treatment of atrial fibrillation in frail and non-frail older people. From 2017 to 2018 I got two postdoc positions at the Geriatric Education and Research Institute in Singapore (with a focus on frailty research), and at the Department of Family Medicine, University of Sherbrooke, Canada (with a focus on multimorbidity, patient-centred care and polypharmacy).
In Australia, I am currently chief investigator on two competitive research grants funded by the National Heart Foundation and the University of Sydney. I am also supervising several PhD and MD students at the University of Sydney. My research program has contributed to the knowledge of cardiovascular diseases in old and frail people. In addition, my research program also provided evidence on the epidemiology and management of cardiovascular diseases in older people in low- and middle-income countries. I have been co-leading many important studies in geriatrics and cardiology in Vietnam. I am an Editorial Board Member of the Journal of Comorbidity. In addition, I am also actively participating in peer reviewing for many high ranked medical journals, such as International Journal of Cardiology, BMJ Open, BMC Geriatrics, Drugs and Aging, Thrombosis Research, Journal of Gerontology-Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences, Australasian Journal on Ageing, Experimental Gerontology, Family Practice, and British Journal of General Practice. I have been elected as a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology in September 2020.
