About Professor Des Richardson

The research passion of our program is to understand the molecular and cellular basis of may types of disease(including cancer and neurodegenerative disease) and to develop new medications for clinical use.

Prof. Richardson is a full time research Professor involved in an extensive variety of techniques in biomedical research; these include cellular, molecular and animal biology.

International Reputation: Dr Richardson holds the positions of Professor of Pathology (University of Sydney), NHMRC Principal Research Fellow and Research Leader of the Cancer, Cell Biology and Development Theme of the Bosch Institute. He also holds international academic posts in both North America (Adjunct Professor, McGill University, Canada) and Europe (Charles University, Prague). His D.Sc was awarded after the minimum 10 year period after his Ph.D. This demonstrates his rapid progress and the international importance of his contributions to the fields of iron metabolism of neoplastic cells.Scholarship:Since 1994 he has attracted >80 grants and career awards from international, national and state funding agencies and currently holds 18 grants, 10 directly focused on cancer research. Prof Richardson’s major contributions to cancer research are focussed on understanding the role of iron in cancer cell proliferation and the development of novel anti-tumour agents known as iron chelators. Indeed, these studies have resulted in highly promising and potent anti-cancer drugs and are subject of a suite of active national patents. Professor Richardson has published over 160 articles, chapters, and patents. Over the last 5 years alone, Prof. Richardson has produced 80 publications in peer-reviewed international journals or books. On 79 of these 80 peer reviewed articles, he is either first or senior author, and 58 have only 1-3 authors. This clearly demonstrates the proficiency and dedication of his laboratory. A number of these articles have been selected for editorial commentary or chosen as “Plenary Papers” (defined as: “articles of exceptional scientific importance”) in high impact journals such as Blood (IF: 10.1). His work is published in a variety of high impact journals e.g., Cell (IF: 29.4), Lancet (23.4), Pharmacol. Rev. (15.7), PNAS USA (10.2), Blood (10.1), EMBO J. (10.1) etc. Professor Richardson is regularly invited to write Leading-Edge Preview Articles, Editorials, Perspective Articles, Commentaries and Reviews for high profile journals (including Cell and Lancet) and he is currently a member of the Editorial Boards of 8 International Journals ie., Redox Report, J. Lab. Clin. Med., J. Inorg. Biochem., BioMetals, Exp. Opin. Invest. Drugs, Int. J. Biochem. Cell Biol., Chem Res. Toxicol. and Biochem. J. Prof. Richardson is frequently invited to examine national & international grants from NHMRC, ARC, NIH etc Contributions to the Scientific and Academic Communities:(A) Scientific Community: Prof. Richardson and his lab members have presented more than 270 papers to date at local, national and international conferences.
