‘TEXT4myBACK’ - Text message intervention to improve function in people with low back pain

Participants will be randomly allocated to one of 2 groups that will receive information in 2 different text message formats. The aim of the study is to improve health outcomes and decrease use of care by providing information in form of text messages.

Your participation in the study will only involve the completion of online surveys. 

You may be eligible to participate in this study if you:

• Are aged 18 years or older.
• Have an episode of non-specific LBP of less than 12 weeks duration, with or without the presence of leg pain
• Have pain classified at least as ‘moderate’ or above in the pain scale of the SF-12 - During the past week, how much did pain interfere with your normal work (including work outside the home and housework)?
  1- Not at all, 2-A little bit, 3-Moderately, 4-Quite a bit, 5-Extremely
• Familiarity with the use and access to, a phone that can receive text messages
  
  

Potential participants will be excluded if any of the following are present:

• Presence of serious pathology (See document 10 for specific questions)
• Current pregnancy
• Spinal surgery within the preceding 12 months.
• Co-morbid health conditions that would prevent active participation in the physical activity programs (e.g. unstable angina, uncontrolled hypertension).
• Inadequate English to understand the text messages or complete outcome measures.
• Any disorder/reason that may reduce capacity to understand and give informed consent.
