The Southern Design Sydney Uni Flames suffered their first defeat of the 2011-12 Women’s National Basketball League season when they went down 74-72 to Logan Thunder in a thriller at the Sydney University Sports & Aquatic Centre on Friday night.

The Flames went to sleep at the closing end of the third term and the opening minutes of the final quarter, allowing Logan to build a buffer.

Down by 14 points with two-and-a-half minutes on the clock, the Flames made a valiant attempt to add to a seven-match winning streak, thanks to Alicia Poto, who put 10 points on the board in the closing period. But the visitors held on to win by two.

Despite being on the losing side, Belinda Snell led the scoring with 36 points (71 per cent field accuracy), with Poto contributing 20, including her closing blitz.

Cayla Francis led the way for the Thunder with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while Renae Camino added 15 points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.

Despite the loss, the Flames still head the competition ladder with seven wins from eight outings. Adelaide (7 from 9), Bulleen (6 from 8), Townsville (6 from 9), Logan (4 from 7) and Dandenong (5 from 9) make up the top six.

The Flames will be looking to return to their winning ways when they take on Adelaide Link at the Sydney University Sports & Aquatic Centre on Friday night. Tip-off at is at 7pm.
