Sydney University’s former Test bowlers Stuart Clark and Stuart MacGill routed Bankstown at University No.1 Oval on Saturday to put the defending premiers back on top of the limited overs competition after seven rounds.

Opening the attack, Clark sent down 10 niggardly overs, including five maidens, to finish with 4-8, while leg-spinner MacGill came on at first change to collect 3-42 off 10 searching overs, including one maiden. The easy calculation shows a tandem 7-50 as Bankstown  slumped to be all out for 152 chasing Sydney University’s modest 6-179 off their 50 overs on the new No.1 Oval deck.

Having been sent in, the Students lost Ian Moran (14) with the total on 16, but Greg Mail (45) and No.3 Scott Henry (57)  put on a 90-run partnership to provide the bulk of the Sydney University total.

Bankstown lost two early wickets before Philip Wells (48) and opener Nick Carruthers (32) set the ship right – momentarily. MacGill had Carruthers caught by Moran and Clarke claimed Wells lbw to end the visitor’s hopes.

In a day of mixed fortunes in the lower grades, Sydney University dropped a rung on the Club Championship ladder. Bankstown claimed the points in Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth grades, as the Students slipped to third with 672 points, behind Manly-Warringah (792) and Sutherland (691).

The news was better in the Poidevin-Grey competition, where Sydney University claimed the points over Sydney in a limited overs fixture at Drummoyne Oval.

Lightning and heavy rain caused the women’s First Grade match between Universities and St George-Sutherland at David Phillips North Oval to be called off and a draw declared after 32 overs.

Universities had reached 7-118 when the match was abandoned, with Alex Blackwell having provided the bulk with 66.
