If opener Greg Mail made a New Year’s resolution to score more runs, he delivered on Saturday with a well-compiled 100 in Sydney University’s commanding 101-run win over Campbelltown-Camden in their limited overs contest at Raby No.1 Oval.

Mail hit nine boundaries in his 124-ball stay and shared in a 158-run opening partnership with Ian Moran, who cracked 73 off 96 deliveries, with nine boundaries, as the Students knocked up 4-274 off their 50 overs after winning the toss and opting to bat.

The big tally was helped along by an onslaught from the Larkin brothers who put on a 64-run fifth-wicket partnership, with Nick finishing not out on 40 off 28 deliveries and Ben not out on a run-a-ball 28.

Campbelltown-Camden began the run-chase in fine style with openers Aaron Yabsley and Daniel Harding rattling up 102 before Harding was bowled by David Miller for 51 off 62 deliveries.

Yabsley soldiered on for an unbeaten 65 as the hosts lost 9-71 to be all out for 173 off 39 overs, with Mail (2-8),  Miller (3-36), Moran (2-21) and Tim Ley (2-30) sharing the spoils.

Mail’s century lifted his season aggregate to 430 at a shade under 36 – his grade career average is 52 – while the consistent Moran now has 423 runs for the season at a shade over 35.

The Students are now second on the two-day |(Belvidere Cup) ladder, third on the Limited Overs ladder and due to meet Randwick-Petersham in the rescheduled final of the Twenty20 competition at University No.1 Oval on Thursday, January 26.

In the lower grades, Sydney University contested a round of Twenty20 matches with Campbelltown-Camden on Saturday, with a win in Seconds and losses in Thirds, Fourths and Fifths.

The Students bowed out of the Poidevin-Gray Shield with a loss to St George and also lost to St George in Round 4 of the A.W. Green Shield.

As a result, Sydney University are now fourth in the Club Championship on 804 points, behind Manly-Warringah (972), Sutherland (885) and St George (814).

The Students will meet Penrith in a round of limited overs matches this Saturday, with the Firsts playing at Howell Oval.
