Sydney University claimed back-to-back Metro League 1 titles in Sydney’s premier women’s hockey competition when they defeated arch-rivals Briars 2-0 on the Olympic pitch at Homebush on Sunday.
Nina Khoury and Mathilda Carmichael were the goal-scorers as Sydney University added a second title to their back-to-back minor premierships.
Sydney University also won the women’s Fourth Grade 4-0, were joint premiers in the Mixed Under 17s after a 1-1 draw in the grand final, and lost the Mixed Under 15s grand final 4-1.
The two combatants in the Metro League 1 decider have enjoyed a healthy rivalry this season, with the Students edging out Briars 3-1 in the major semi-final to progress to Sunday’s decider.
Their Round 8 encounter resulted in a 1-nil win to Briars, while the Round 17 clash ended in a 1-all draw.
While Sydney University enjoyed a weekend off after the major semi-final, Briars defeated Moorebank 2-1 to earn a grand final berth, only to be denied for a second year in a row – they lost 3-1 to the Students in 2012.
This season eight of Sydney University’s 10 senior women’s teams won their way through to the finals series, making them one of the strongest women’s hockey clubs in the country. The Division Four and Six teams were also minor premiers.
“Almost every hockey turf in Sydney had a Sydney University women’s team playing in the finals,” Sydney University Hockey Club Treasurer, Anne Simmons, said. “A massive congratulations to the coaches and players.”
