Universities Women’s Cricket Club claimed the 2013-14 Sydney First Grade title with a 98-run win over St George Sutherland at Bankstown Oval on Sunday.
After losing the toss and being sent in to bat, Universities rattled up 4-199 from their 50 overs, with Alison Parkin topscoring with 61 not out in a 97-ball stay that included four boundaries.
Sydney University graduate Kate Blackwell (55) and openers Rachael Haynes (32) and Georgia Redmayne (22) also helped Universities post a competitive score. Haynes is part of SUSF Elite Athlete Program (EAP) and is the teams captain.
The St George Sutherland chase was under pressure from the outset when Sydney University graduate Kate Owen, who finished with 4-10, and Melissa Norup (2-21) ripped through the top order to have them 4-26.
Universities continued to exert pressure and St George Sutherland were all out for 101 off 37.4 overs.
Universities Third Grade missed out on a berth in the final when they were Gordon defeated them by 100 runs in their semi-final at Forsyth Park on Saturday.
But the Universities Brewer Shield (Under 17) team will meet Campbelltown-Camden in the final after accounting for St George Sutherland by one wicket in their semi-final at David Phillips North on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Sydney University Cricket Club has four teams still alive in the men’s grade competitions after the qualifying finals at the weekend.
In a high-scoring match at Sydney University No.1 Oval, Bankstown defeated the hosts on the first innings to stay alive in the competition.
Jarrad Bourke cracked 116 not out and Jake Cormack scored 71 in Bankstown’s 7-263 in reply to Sydney University’s 262, which was dominated by 117 from opener Nick Larkin.
Having finished on top of the competition proper, Sydney University live to fight another day and will meet Randwick-Petersham in a semi-final at Coogee Oval this Saturday and Sunday. In the other semi-final Manly-Warringah will host Bankstown at Manly Oval.
The highlight of the weekend’s cricket came in the Second Grade qualifying final between Sydney University and Mosman which ended in a draw.
The Students rattled up 8(dec)-513 with young opener Jack Hill remaining unbeaten on 200. He scored 17 boundaries in a 493-ball stay of patience and skill, and shared in partnerships of 118 with opener Will Hay (62), 70 with No.3 Adam Theobald (47), and 155 with Darius Visser (88). Mosman batted out the second day to be 8-157 at stumps.
Sydney University will meet St George at University No.1 Oval in one semi-final, while Northern District will host Gordon at Mark Taylor Oval.
Sydney University Third Grade moved through to the semi-finals on the back of a tightly contested outright win over Sutherland in their qualifying final at University No.2 Oval.
Having lost the toss and been sent in, the Students were rolled for 125 in their first innings, but replied in kind by knocking over the visitors for 116.
Opener Suda Sivapalan led the way with 93 in Sydney University’s second innings of 239 and they then rolled Sutherland for 205 to wrap up the match.
The semi-finals on March 29 and 30 will see Sydney University and Sydney playing at Sydney University No.2 Oval, and Northern District and Gordon meeting at Asquith Oval.
Sydney University’s Metropolitan Cup side is also through to the semi-finals despite losing their qualifying final to Western Suburbs.
Wests scored 167 and skittled the Students for 103 at St Paul’s College Oval. The semi-finals will feature Gordon v Western Suburbs and Sydney University v Blacktown.
