NSW Indigenous Chamber of Commerce partners with University of Sydney Business School
Indigenous-owned businesses will receive education, mentoring and support to increase their capacity as part of a new partnership between the NSW Indigenous Chamber of Commerce and University of Sydney Business School.

Launched yesterday at the Chamber’s Infrastructure and Construction Forum, the Indigenous Supplier Development Program will equip Indigenous business owners with the skills and contacts to grow their business and impact.

The unique collaboration will blend mentorship, networking and practical application of business education. Starting in the second half of 2023, the program aims to accept a dozen business leaders for each three-month intake.

Professor Lisa Jackson Pulver, University of Sydney Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy and Services), said the initiative aligns with the University’s One Sydney, Many People strategy.

Research shows that spending on Indigenous-owned businesses has a strong multiplier effect of social impact, and as an organisation with considerable spending power, we’re in a position to make a positive impact through our procurement strategy.

“I’m proud to see this partnership come to fruition and look forward to meeting the many business leaders who will benefit from the incredible opportunities being made more available to them.”

Debbie Barwick, NSW Indigenous Chamber of Commerce Chief Executive Officer, said: “This exciting collaboration recognises the importance of investing in the growth of Aboriginal enterprises, and the recognition of those enterprises as a strong pillar within a prosperous NSW. The program will allow us to invest in growing the pipeline of Aboriginal enterprises, recognising the infrastructure needs of tomorrow, and ensuring we meet those demands.”

Professor Greg Whitwell, University of Sydney Business School Dean, said he was delighted to see the Indigenous Supplier Development Program take shape.

“Our experienced and award-winning academics play a leading role in helping shape a better future for our communities through this type of initiative. Being part of the program reflects the Business School’s commitment to responsible management education practices,” Professor Whitwell said.

The academic component of the program is being coordinated by Dr Danika Wright, Associate Dean (Indigenous Strategy and Services) at the University of Sydney Business School.

The Indigenous Supplier Development Program is an exciting and innovative opportunity for the University of Sydney, together with the NSW Indigenous Chamber of Commerce, to support Indigenous entrepreneurs in building their capabilities and transition their businesses beyond the start-up phase.

The program is sponsored by Turner and Townsend, HKA, Logikal and Deloitte, who sought an innovative way to build capability for Aboriginal-owned businesses in NSW.

More information about applications to the Indigenous Supplier Development Program will be made available closer to the program commencement.
