James Millner AM graduated from Pharmacy at the University of Sydney in 1947 and after returning home from being a prisoner of war during World War 2, he joined the family business, Soul Pattinson, which had been founded by his maternal grandfather, Levy Miall Pattinson. The James Millner PHD Scholarship in Pharmacy was created to honour his memory by his wife, Jean Millner and their extended family in 2013. This full-time postgraduate scholarship is available for a suitably qualified candidate with a first class honours degree (or H1 equivalent result e.g., MPhil) in pharmacy, pharmacology, biomedical science or equivalent four year health science discipline, to undertake research studies leading to a PhD in Pharmacy. The candidate should also have training or experience in a relevant field such as epidemiology or public health.
PHD
The project will be part of the multidisciplinary program on Research Integrity and Science Policy that focuses on describing cultural, social, corporate, political and other influences on the design, conduct and dissemination of research. The candidate will have the opportunity to use mixed-methods approaches to study the role of clinical evidence and other factors in medicines selection and drug pricing decisions. The goal is to improve the transparency and evidence-base for making medicine regulatory and purchasing decisions, particularly for chronic conditions. International comparisons of drug selection processes may be possible. The successful candidate will be part of an internationally recognized multidisciplinary team incorporating pharmacy, epidemiology, health policy and health services research and mentored by the Chair of Medicines Use and Health Outcomes at the Charles Perkins Centre.
Applicants should have a demonstrated interest in evidence-based health care and medicines use and experience in critical appraisal of drug studies, conducting systematic reviews, and analysis of archival data. We seek a candidate who is interested in working across different research paradigms and who can work well as part of a team. The candidate should be able to demonstrate very strong written and verbal communication skills. Applicants must be Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents or New Zealand citizens. The scholarship shall be valued at the same rate as the Australian Postgraduate Award (APA), and indexed annually. It may be renewed for up to three years, subject to satisfactory progress.
