Avian influenza spillover risk at the wild bird-domestic poultry interface

Summary

An exciting opportunity exists to receive PhD training in epidemiology at both the University of Sydney and University of Copenhagen. This joint PhD Program gives doctoral candidates the opportunity to undertake a joint PhD delivered by both institutions where they will enjoy the benefit of joint supervision by USYD and UCPH academics.

Synopsis

Avian influenza is a transboundary disease that causes substantial impact on poultry production, food security, animal welfare and human health. More and more outbreaks have been observed in Europe and North America during the past few years. Wild birds are a key part of the epidemiological cycle of avian influenza, and zoonotic transmission and pandemic potential are key issues driving avian influenza research.

The purpose of this PhD project is to understand the wild bird and environmental conditions which lead to avian influenza outbreaks in domestic poultry. This will enable surveillance systems and control strategies to be designed and fine-tuned.

This project will include elements of spatiotemporal modelling, analysis of surveillance data, GIS and spatial analysis, risk assessment and statistical and simulation modelling.

This project will be taking place at Camden campus (Shute Building) and Camperdown campus (JD Stewart Building). 

Candidates at the University of Sydney will be expected to apply for an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship, so must be Australian / New Zealand citizens or permanent residents and eligible for admission to the University of Sydney PhD program. Additional financial support is available via the USYD−UCPH joint PhD program initiative.
