From developing solutions for food sustainability to informing government policy, the possibilities are endless. We want to prepare you for wherever your career might lead, so we work together with industry to offer experiences that will build your employability skills while you study.

Opportunities

Internships with industry give you the opportunity to develop the experience and network to kickstart your career. The success of our internships have led to students securing jobs, building important skills and making connections within their chosen field. Organisations our students are working with include:

As part of the Food and Agribusiness degree, all third year students complete a 12-week industry internship. Multinational corporations to boutique breweries are involved in providing internship opportunities to students, and the placement is designed to be beneficial for both the students and the host companies.

Second year chemistry students can choose to spend their third year of study in full-time employment in the chemical industry or a government scientific laborator as part of our Year in Industry program. This program broadens your skills, builds experience, and also opens up opportunities for future employability and research projects.

Final year Bachelor of Veterinary Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students undertake clinical rotations through a variety of career option placements. As a student intern you will complete rotations at our University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals and with our Partners in Veterinary Education. Core placements are within the areas of small animal practice, rural mixed practice and government agencies. Elective rotations may be in a wide variety of areas and enable you to focus on particular career interests such as government, industry, research specialist practice, equine and wildlife.

Industry and Community Project Units are 6 credit point elective units, that provide you with the opportunity to work on authentic problems and issues set out by industry, community and government organisations. Some examples of projects include:

  • PwC – Future of Sydney precincts
  • QBE – Impact of climate change
  • Westmead Redevelopment, Western Sydney Local Health District – Sustainability: Furniture reuse, repurpose and recycling
  • Westpac – The impact of artificial intelligence on banking

High-achieving students in our Dalyell Scholars program have the opportunity to work with our researchers on real research projets during their studies, providing a launching pad into a careeer as a scientist in their chosen field.

We offer a range of special career programs and events run throughout the year. Our science career events bring together academics and industry leaders to discuss jobs across different sectors and how to get them.
