SURG5012: Surgical Metabolism
2024 unit information
The aims of the unit are for the student to acquire knowledge of nutrition in surgery and to understand adaptive response of the body to stress, trauma and sepsis. By the end of the unit the student will become competent in providing enteral and parenteral nutritional therapy to metabolically compromised patients. Content includes Nutrition assessment, Surgical Complications in Malnourished patients, Enteral and Parenteral Nutrition, Complications in Obese, Obesity and Surgery, Short Bowel Syndrome and Enterocutaneous fistula.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. Provide participants with skills to assess nutritional strategy status in surgery
- LO2. Enable participants to understand the surgical complications associated with malnourishment
- LO3. Explain different modalities of nutritional supplement
- LO4. Provide participants with an understanding of complications associated with obesity in surgery
- LO5. Provide participants with an understanding of different types of weight reduction procedures
- LO6. Explain complex surgical metabolic conditions including short bowel syndrome and enterocutaneous fistula
