Background

This scholarship was established in 2019 to enable recipients of the DFA Hong Kong Design Talent Award to develop and elevate their versatility, resourcefulness and professional knowledge by supporting their further study at renowned overseas design institutes.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2019 to enable recipients of the DFA Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award (DFA HKYDTA), a nurturing program for up-and-coming designers based in Hong Kong, to develop and elevate their versatility, resourcefulness and professional knowledge by supporting their further study at renowned overseas design institutes.

b. The Scholarship offers a subsidised place in the form of 50% of tuition fees for 1 year for the Master of Design degree within the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be:

I. short-listed for the DFA Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award, and

II. an international student currently enrolled or enrolling in a Diploma in Design or Master of Design degree within the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney.

b. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant being a recipient of the DFA Hong Kong Young Design Talent Award and being enrolled or having an unconditional offer of admission for the Diploma in Design or Master of Design degree within the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit,

II. curriculum vitae detailing their design background, career achievements, professional qualifications and memberships, and any design-related awards,

III. submission of a proposed plan for overseas study including objectives and expected learning outcomes,

IV. a personal statement detailing their personal aspirations, objectives, talents and achievements, and

V. a digital portfolio of design work

b. Short listed candidates will be invited to attend two rounds of judging with a selection committee consisting of academic representatives of the Sydney School of Architecture Design and Planning, which will enable them to showcase their design work, as well as their communication and presentation skills.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean, Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning, or their nominated delegate.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at 50% of tuition fees for the relevant Diploma in Design or Master of Design degree in the Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning at the University of Sydney and is tenable for 1 year.

b. The value of the Student Services Amenities Fee (SSAF) will be provided as part of the Scholarship for one year, subject to satisfactory academic performance.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean, Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning, and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 65 each semester.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to continue receipt of the scholarship.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. commences part-time study without prior approval,

III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

VI. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
