Who's eligible

You must:

  • be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen
  • be enrolled or have an unconditional offer to study a full-time undergraduate coursework degree in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences
  • identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer* (LGBTIQ+).

Note: *In this context queer is used as an umbrella term to describe people of diverse genders and sexualities.

Background

This scholarship was established in 2019 from a crowdfunding project that recognises the 78ers legacy.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2019 from a crowd funding project that recognises the 78ers legacy and supports undergraduate students who identify as LGBTIQ+.

b. This Scholarship has been donated by over 50 community members.

2. Eligibility

a. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant having an unconditional offer of admission or being currently enrolled in full-time in an undergraduate coursework degree within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, New Zealand Citizen, or Australian Permanent Resident.

c. Applicants must identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer *(LGBTIQ+).

*In this context queer is used as an umbrella term to describe people of diverse genders and sexualities

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I. academic merit, and

II. a personal statement or other original material - for example a poem or link to a video - demonstrating commitment to promoting awareness and understanding of issues that may affect people of diverse genders and sexualities.

b. Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an interview.

c. Preference will be given to applicants who demonstrate financial hardship.

d. The Scholarship will be awarded by a selection committee consisting of:

I. at least two Faculty members, and

II. the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, or

III. their nominated delegates.

e. At least one member of the selection committee must identify as LGBTIQ+.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $6265 per annum and is tenable for one year.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Associate Dean and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university with prior approval.

d. The scholarship is not transferable to another faculty or university.

e. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

f. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a semester average mark (SAM) of at least 65 each semester.

b. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. commences part-time study without prior approval from the Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences,

III. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

IV. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

V. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
