Who's eligible

You must:

  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015.
  • Be currently enrolled on full-time basis in an undergraduate degree at Sydney Dental School or the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the University of Sydney.
  • Be able to demonstrate financial need.

Established in 2020 with a gift from Dr Lawrence F Smith, this scholarship has been developed to support an undergraduate Aboriginal and/or Torres Straits Islander student, demonstrating financial need, and studying within the Sydney Dental School or the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the University of Sydney.

a.     Established in 2020 with a gift from Dr Lawrence F Smith, this Scholarship has been developed to support an undergraduate Aboriginal and/or Torres Straits Islander student, demonstrating financial need, and studying within the Sydney Dental School or the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the University of Sydney.

2.     Eligibility

a.     Applicants must identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person as defined in the University of Sydney’s Confirmation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Identity Policy 2015.

b.     Applicants must be currently enrolled on full-time basis in an undergraduate degree at Sydney Dental School or the Sydney Conservatorium of Music at the University of Sydney.

c.      Applicants must be able to demonstrate financial need.

3.     Selection Criteria

a.     The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

I.         academic merit,

II.         demonstrated financial need and

III.         a personal statement describing how the scholarship would help support the applicant in their studies at either the Sydney Dental School or the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.

b.     The Scholarship will be awarded by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Education) on the nomination of a selection committee consisting of representatives of the Sydney Dental School and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Indigenous Strategy and Services) and/or their nominated delegates.

4.     Value

a.     The Scholarship is valued at $2,000 as a one-off lumpsum amount.

b.     The Scholarship will be paid within two weeks of scholarship offer acceptance and enrolment verification.

c.      Deferral and suspension of the Scholarship is not permitted.

d.     No other amount is payable.

5.     Termination

a.     The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I.         withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II.         commences part-time study,

III.         is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

IV.         any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b.     Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.  

c.      Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instances in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
