Who's eligible

You must:

  • be a medallist in an International Science Olympiad in one or more of the following areas: biology, chemistry, earth science, geography, informatics, mathematics, physics
  • have achieved an ATAR of 95.00 or higher in the year of application for this scholarship
  • be commencing an undergraduate degree in the Faculty of Science, or a double or combined undergraduate degree in which one component of the degree is within the Faculty of Science
  • enrol in at least 12 credit points in the subject area associated with their International Science Olympiad medal(s) in their first year.

Background

Established in 2004, this Scholarship recognises the exceptional talent of applicants who have represented Australia and been awarded a medal at an International Science Olympiad. The Scholarship encourages recipients to continue to pursue their passion for science in an undergraduate degree within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

1. Background

a. This Scholarship was established in 2004 to recognise the exceptional talent of applicants who have represented Australia and medalled at an International Science Olympiad.

b. The Scholarship encourages recipients to continue to pursue their passion for science in an undergraduate degree within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must be an Australian Citizen or Australian Permanent Resident.

b. The Scholarship is offered subject to the applicant being a recent school leaver and having an unconditional offer of admission in full-time in an undergraduate degree (including combined and double degrees) within the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney.

c. Applicants must be a medallist in an International Science Olympiad in one or more of the following areas:

I. Biology,

II. Chemistry,

III. Earth Science,

IV. Geography,

V. Informatics,

VI. Mathematics, or

VII. Physics.

d. Applicants must be enrolled in at least 12 credit points of units of study in the subject area associated with their International Science Olympiad medal(s) in their first year of enrolment.

e. Applicants must have achieved an ATAR or equivalent of at least 95.00 in the HSC or equivalent.

f. Applicants who have deferred or have undertaken a gap year are not eligible.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.

b. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Dean of the Faculty of Science, or their nominated delegates.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $5,000 per annum and is tenable for one year only.

b. The Scholarship annual value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each semester.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Science and it is not transferable to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing Eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum Semester Average Mark (SAM) of 65 each semester.

b. Recipients must complete, during their first year of enrolment, at least 12 credit points of units of study in the subject area associated with their International Science Olympiad medal(s).

c. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. commences part-time study without prior approval,

III. does not enrol in or satisfactorily complete, at least 12 credit points in the subject area associated with their International Science Olympiad medal(s) in their first year of enrolment,

IV. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

V. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

VI. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

VII. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated unless due to University error.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or the Scholarship is terminated under any instance in the Termination Clause of these terms and conditions, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
