Background

This Scholarship aims to support a student undertaking a PhD in Geography within the School of Geosciences, Faculty of Science.

The research project will engage with human geography concepts and methods. The focus of the research will be on the geographies and materialities of flood protection infrastructures in the context of rapid urbanisation and climate change in Jakarta, Indonesia and/or Suva, Fiji. We will investigate how key materials – including water and sand – are assembled to build resilient urban infrastructure in Jakarta and Suva. Using social science research methods, we will identify the impacts of this landscape, market, and labour transformations across sites of extraction, circulation, and use.

This Scholarship is funded through ARC DECRA Project on ‘Building Urban Resilience: Adaptation Economies in the Asia-Pacific’ (DE210101443) and School of Geosciences, Faculty of Science.
