  • be enrolled in or commencing a full-time honours program offered by the School of Life and Environmental Sciences
  • be willing to undertake research in the area of whole genome CRISPR gene editing to identify novel factors regulating human stem cell pluripotency and differentiation, and
  • demonstrate an excellent understanding of molecular biology, genetics, and/or genomics.

Background

This scholarship is intended to support an elite candidate to undertake an honours project in the Doctor John and Anne Chong Lab for Functional Genomics at the Charles Perkins Centre.

The honours project will involve the use of whole genome CRISPR gene editing to identify novel factors regulating human stem cell pluripotency and differentiation. The successful candidate will receive training in molecular biology, cell biology, microscopy, FACS, and bioinformatics analysis of data as required.

1. Background

a. The Honours Scholarship for Excellence in Functional Genomics is intended to support an elite candidate to undertake an honours project in the Doctor John and Anne Chong Lab for Functional Genomics at the Charles Perkins Centre. The honours project will involve the use of whole genome CRISPR gene editing to identify novel factors regulating human stem cell pluripotency and differentiation. The successful candidate will receive training in molecular biology, cell biology, microscopy, FACS, and bioinformatics analysis of data as required.

2. Eligibility

a. Applicants must have applied for entry into and be commencing, or have commenced, a full-time honours program offered by the School of Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Sydney.

b. Applicants must be willing to undertake research in the area of whole genome CRISPR gene editing to identify novel factors regulating human stem cell pluripotency and differentiation.

c. Applicants must demonstrate an excellent understanding of molecular biology, genetics, and/or genomics.

3. Selection Criteria

a. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of:

i. academic merit,

ii. curriculum vitae, and

iii. a personal statement that demonstrates interest in the area of research.

b. Shortlisted candidates may be required to attend either an in-person or Skype interview.

c. The Scholarship will be awarded on the nomination of a Selection Committee consisting of the Head of the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, or their nominated delegate, and an academic member of staff from the Doctor John and Anne Chong Lab for Functional Genomics at the Charles Perkins Centre.

4. Value

a. The Scholarship is valued at $8,000 and is tenable for one year only.

b. The Scholarship value will be paid in two equal instalments after the census date of each relevant semester.

c. Deferral of the Scholarship is not permitted without the prior permission of the Head of the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, or their nominated delegate, and it is not transferable for another purpose, or to another University school, faculty or university without prior approval.

d. The Scholarship will be offered subject to the availability of funds.

e. No other amount is payable.

5. Ongoing eligibility

a. To continue receipt of the Scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum SAM of 65 for any coursework units of study required as part of their honours program.

b. The recipient must maintain full-time enrolment in their eligible honours program.

c. Recipients undertaking an exchange during the tenure of this Scholarship are required to have achieved a Satisfied Requirements grade (SR) to receive their next payment.

6. Termination

a. The Scholarship will be terminated if the recipient:

I. withdraws from an eligible course or fails to enrol,

II. withdraws from their honours program with the Doctor John and Anne Chong Lab for Functional Genomics at the Charles Perkins Centre,

III. commences part-time study without prior approval,

IV. does not maintain satisfactory academic performance,

V. is determined by the University to be guilty of serious misconduct, including, but not limited to, having provided false or misleading information as part of their Scholarship application,

VI. accepts an alternative scholarship, administered by the University of Sydney, for the same purpose as this Scholarship. In such circumstances this scholarship will be terminated in favour of the alternative scholarship where the alternative scholarship is of higher value,

VII. does not resume study at the end of a period of approved leave, or

VIII. any other provision as indicated in these terms that would lead to termination.

b. Once the Scholarship has been terminated, it will not be reinstated.

c. Where a student is found guilty of serious misconduct or withdraws from the relevant course, the University reserves the right to request that any Scholarship funds paid to the Scholarship recipient be reimbursed.
