Installing updates on your device

Tips to keeping your software and personal devices up to date to protect against vulnerabilities and cyber threats.

Why install updates?

Software updates are one of the strongest defences you can have against cyber security attacks. They make it much harder for hackers to get to your information by fixing security gaps that cybercriminals look to exploit.

Updating University devices

University devices automatically receive updates, so look out for the notification about them in your taskbar and install them as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more exposed you are to cyber attacks.

After the download, restart your device to apply the updates.

Managing updates

Enable automatic updates

Ensure your devices and software receive the latest security patches and features automatically wherever possible.

Manually check for updates

For systems and apps that don't support automatic updates, regularly check for and manually install updates.

Update all devices

Apply updates to all your computers, mobiles, tablets, smart wearables and home products.

Verify update sources

Only install updates from official sources or trusted vendor websites.

Be aware that older devices may no longer receive security, software or firmware updates. This is known as ‘end of support’ or ‘end of life’. If updates are no longer available, consider replacing the device.
