Guide for new students

Connecting with students and clubs

Meeting new people can be one of the most rewarding experiences about starting university. Make friends, build career networks, or develop your skills in a hobby or a sport, by getting involved in some of these many opportunities.

Student Life Grants

Funding and support that you can apply for to create innovative co-curricular projects that build a sense of community. Grants are offered in four going streams:

  • Welcome
  • Sustainibility Action
  • General
  • Dalyell

Find out more about Student Life Grants.

Clubs and societies

Students run more than 200 clubs and societies with the support of the University of Sydney Union (USU). This gives you the opportunity to meet other students with similar interests, practise your skills or learn something new.

You will need to have USU Membership to join, available through the USU.

You can search the different clubs and societies on the USU website. Many of them are free to join and others will require a small fee to help cover the cost of events or equipment.

You can also start your own club. Information and the requirements you will need to meet are outlined on the USU website.

Find out more about clubs and societies on the USU website.

Sports & recreation

It doesn't matter whether you’re training for a gold medal or looking for a lunch time workout, Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) offers programs, memberships and sports clubs to suit everyone.

Find out more about sport and rec on the SUSF website.

Social media

Moving to a new city can feel daunting, so it’s important to connect with local communities to help you settle in. Joining our official University social media communities is a great place to start, where you’ll find out important information about study and life in Sydney, as well as fun events on campus.
