A Unique Student Identifier (USI) is your personal education identifier issued by the Australian Government. It is made up of 10 letters and numbers.

Who needs a USI?

If you’re studying in Australia, you're required by the Australian Government to have a USI to be able to graduate and receive your award.

 • International students need one if they are studying any of their course onshore.
 • Domestic students need a USI to study in a Commonwealth supported place and be eligible for commonwealth financial assistance (such as a HELP loan).

Steps to apply for a USI

Your USI is unique so you can only have one. If you're unsure whether you've already created one, you can check if you have an existing USI.

1. Create a USI

You can only apply while you're in Australia. If you haven’t arrived in the country yet but know that you will, you won’t be able to create a USI until you’ve gone through customs in Australia. You can apply for a USI when you arrive.

Creating your USI is simple and takes about 5 minutes.

 1. Apply through the Australian Government USI website. You will need to have a form of identification, such as a passport, ImmiCard, driver’s licence or Australian birth certificate.
 2. When you are creating your USI, make sure you provide the same details that you used when enrolling. Your legal names need to match, otherwise issues can occur.

2. Provide your USI

When to provide your USI

You will be prompted to provide your USI in Sydney Student during enrolment.

If you are an international student and have not yet arrived in Australia, select that you are offshore so that you won't need to provide a USI when you enrol. As soon as you arrive in Australia you will need to get your USI and provide it to us.

You need to provide a USI as soon as possible. Without one you won’t be allowed to access your semester results or graduate.

We may place a sanction on your enrolment if you're studying onshore in Australia and haven't given us your USI – this would prevent you from accessing your results and academic records.

If you're a domestic student, you won’t be able to be enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place or access a HELP loan.

What happens if I don’t provide a USI?
