Guaranteed Entry

Select your UAC preferences with confidence
Find out what selection rank you need to guarantee entry to your dream course.

Guaranteed Entry gives you a confirmed place in an eligible degree with available places if you achieve the required selection rank and meet any other admission criteria.

Your selection rank is your ATAR plus any adjustment factors you receive through our entry schemes.

selection rank equals ATAR plus adjustment factors

To be guaranteed a place in a degree with Guaranteed Entry you must:

  • List one of the available courses as your highest eligible preference.
  • Achieve the required selection rank.
  • Meet any other admission criteria for your course.

If you don’t meet the guaranteed selection rank, you may still be eligible to receive an offer depending on the availability of places in the course.

Eligibility

You are eligible for Guaranteed Entry if you:

  • are a domestic student applying with an Australian Year 12 qualification (such as the NSW HSC or VCE) where you are awarded an ATAR on completion
  • are a recent school leaver
  • meet all essential admission criteria.

Guaranteed Entry only applies to the first UAC offer round in which you are eligible to receive an offer after receiving your Australian Year 12 qualification and ATAR. Guaranteed Entry is also subject to places being available in the course you apply for.

If you do not meet the criteria above, read the information for other students below.

Further information

Read the additional details below or contact us for more information.

Adjustment factors increase your selection rank based on factors such as your performance in HSC subjects, the location of your school, or your eligibility for Educational Access Schemes.

Adjustment factors don't change your ATAR, they change your selection rank for a particular course. If you are not eligible for adjustment factors, your selection rank is your ATAR.

At the University of Sydney, you can receive adjustment factors through entry schemes, such as the Academic Excellence Scheme.

Domestic students completing other qualifications may also be eligible for adjustment factors, which are applied to your ATAR equivalent rank.

Important note: adjustment factors do not apply to international applicants.

Many of our courses require you to meet other essential admission criteria (e.g. mathematics prerequisite, audition/portfolio). Check your course for further information.

Some courses above do not have a guaranteed selection rank and are indicative. These selection ranks are a guide. To be eligible for admission, you may need to achieve a higher selection rank and for some courses meet additional admission criteria.

Check your course for detailed information on additional admission criteria.

If you meet the Guaranteed Entry selection rank and all admission criteria for your course, you will be eligible to receive an offer of admission.

If you receive an offer, you will be notified through UAC.

For students who complete the NSW HSC in 2023, Guaranteed Entry applies to UAC’s December Round 2. Preferences for this round close on 15 December 2023. Offers are made 21 December 2023.

For students completing an interstate qualification, Guaranteed Entry will apply to the first UAC offer round you are eligible to receive an offer.

A recent school leaver is anyone who completed Year 12 (or equivalent) less than 2 years ago, or less than 1 year ago if they have existing tertiary studies.

Other student information

Below you can find information for international students and those applying from New Zealand or with an IB diploma.

Guaranteed entry is available to students who receive an IB Admissions Score (IBAS) based on the ATAR conversion supplied by UAC. Students who obtain a converted ATAR above the guaranteed entry score for relevant courses in the round immediately after they receive their results are eligible.

Domestic students should refer to the UAC website to learn more about the conversion of IB results to an ATAR equivalent.

For New Zealand students, if you completed the National Certificate in Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3, an Interstate Transfer Index (ITI) will be calculated by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). This will be used in the admission process as the ATAR equivalent score, provided you have fulfilled university entrance requirements as set by NZQA.

Guaranteed Entry is not relevant to international students. Read the 2024 Admission Guide for international students (pdf, 1705KB) for further information.
