Bachelor of Advanced Studies

Combined with your Bachelor degree or as a standalone final year
If you’re looking to improve your career prospects, open the door to further academic study, or pursue a passion, an additional year of study is your next step.

Combined Bachelor of Advanced Studies

The Bachelor of Advanced Studies is a combined four (sometimes five) year undergraduate degree that offers you the flexibility to explore multiple interests and to distinguish yourself in your final year.

In your final year, you can choose to undertake advanced coursework or an honours research project.

This degree enables you to:

  • Design your own degree by combining majors from a range of disciplines.
  • Complete a second major1 from either your primary study area or the shared pool of majors and minors.
  • Deepen your critical thinking skills through advanced coursework and real-world industry, entrepreneurial, community and research challenges across disciplines or an Honours research project.
  • Students commencing undergraduate study, including recent high school leavers, non-recent school leavers and mature-age entry.
  • Current University of Sydney students who decide to continue to a final year by transferring from the single bachelor’s degree into the combined Bachelor of Advanced Studies. Learn more about changing your degree.

Bachelor of Advanced Studies (one-year add on)

The Bachelor of Advanced Studies is an additional year of intensive study that complements your prior studies and deepens your expertise in your chosen field. It can increase your employment prospects or enable you to pursue further research.

The Bachelor of Advanced Studies can be completed via the Coursework or Honours pathways (see below).

  • Students who have completed a qualifying bachelor’s degree at the University of Sydney or another institution.
  • Students who have taken a break and wish to return to study to complete honours or advanced coursework, including a substantial real-world project in your chosen field.

The Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Coursework) provides an opportunity to experience work outside the classroom by collaborating on a substantial real-world project in a professional, community or entrepreneurial setting.

You'll also undertake advanced units that challenge and hone your critical thinking abilities.

Students will need to select a discipline area when applying. Options include:

The Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Honours) provides an opportunity to undertake a supervised but independent research project as well as connected advanced Honours coursework. It is open to high achieving students who have completed an undergraduate degree with two majors and meet the admission criteria.

If you do not have two majors or are on track to complete them in your undergraduate degree, you can consider an appended honours year instead.
