Eligibility and applying for student exchange

Student exchange – who can apply and how does it work?

As a University of Sydney student you’ll have the opportunity to participate in our student exchange program at one of over 250 partner universities.

We have over 250 exchange partner universities in more than 40 countries; 131 of which are listed among the top 200 universities in the world (Times Higher Education World Ranking 2019). Most of our partner universities offer units in English – so you are not limited to only English-speaking countries when thinking about where you can go.

The process of applying is not something you need to worry about in any detail until after you commence your degree, but if you’re curious, you can take a look on the student website. Right now, be assured that there are many options for exchange with a lot of support to get you there.

Eligibility information

  • To be considered for semester exchange, students will need to meet the University of Sydney eligibility criteria for exchange mobility. More information on University of Sydney eligibility criteria can be found on the student website.
  • Students also need to meet any additional eligibility criteria required by the partner institution. Please visit the Global Mobility Database to find more information on our exchange partner institutions, including partner-specific eligibility requirements.
  • You should attend an exchange information session after you commence studying at the University of Sydney. This will allow you to ask questions and understand whether you are eligible, refine where you want to go, and how to apply.
  • The Sydney Law SchoolSydney College of the Arts and the Master of Management (CEMS) manage their own exchange agreements specific to their faculty or course. Consult their websites (or the student website) for application information.

There are 2 exchange application deadlines, one at the end of each semester. We nominate a year in advance to when you want to go – so planning is key!

If you would like to study at an institution that is not currently partnered with the University of Sydney, please contact Sydney Abroad with details of the institution and/or program and your reasons for wanting to participate. A Sydney Abroad adviser will contact you to discuss your options.

The process for applying for student exchange

Find your Mobility Window - the time in your degree which has the most flexibility. This might mean swapping around some units so you can choose the right combination of major, minor or elective units to take overseas.

Research what you can study, where you can go and the university that will suit you. Please note that you will need to meet both the University of Sydney and the host institution eligibility requirements.

Apply for exchange through the Global Mobility Database before the deadline. You’ll need to apply a year in advance for semester exchange programs.

Get nominated (if your application for exchange is approved, you are 'nominated' to a specific exchange partner university by Sydney Abroad).
