Stories about Greek and Roman gods, heroes, and monsters occupy an important place in Western culture. Greco-Roman mythology is the fount of inspiration for masterpieces of art, music, and literature. This unit examines these enduring ancient narratives, symbols, and mythical ideas in their historical, cultural and religious context. Learn about the manifold meanings of myth, its transformations and transgressions, its uses and abuses from antiquity to the present day.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. demonstrate an understanding about Greek, Roman and other ancient cultures
- LO2. familiarize with a genre that is the foundation of much art, music and literature from the renaissance to the modern day
- LO3. develop an insight into the use of myth as a medium of communication and cultural expression
- LO4. contextualize cultural products within an historical framework, and so realise that knowledge and beliefs are not ‘value free’
- LO5. demonstrate an understanding of a body of knowledge that is central to many disciplines
- LO6. identify, define, investigate, and solve problems, particularly with reference to the sophisticated handling of ancient sources and material culture
- LO7. understand anxieties and concerns of cultures separated from their own by time and place
- LO8. develop written and oral communication skills
- LO9. develop as an independent learner.
