Water systems are rapidly changing as a result of climate change. Flooding, drought, or salination and shifting hydrological regimes affect buildings, cities and landscapes. These changes require new design strategies that allow for living with changing water systems at a time of transitions. This unit examines the dynamic relation between water systems and the built environment, exploring how design can respond to and engage with these changing conditions. Adopting a multi-scalar and long-term perspective, the unit draws on the study of historical structures, landscapes, and cultural practices. It explores changing water values and proposes ways to rethink the relationship between water and architecture and to develop adaptive strategies for designing with water. It investigates changing perceptions and values of water and considers how these influence contemporary design challenges and opportunities. Through critical analysis and design inquiry, students will explore adaptive strategies for living with changing water systems. By rethinking the relationship between water and architecture, by protecting heritage and analyzing its potential for sustainable practices, the unit opens a space for design innovation that addresses the challenges of changing water systems and their impact on the built environment.
