ARHT3675: Objects and Problems in the Art Museum
2027 unit information
This unit brings students into sustained contact with objects in the Art Museums and art spaces of Sydney. It challenges the students to research, present, analyse and curate them. It is designed to build and test the key skills of art historians in the world - from basic analysis of materials and techniques to presentation and comparison of artworks to the understanding of complex questions of cultural meaning, ownership and collection politics. It brings students into close contact with art objects of all types and challenges students to develop skills of reflection, presentation and research that are the foundation of art historical and museum practice.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. Demonstrate familiarity with a range of museum objects in different mediums and from different time periods
- LO2. Identify and analyse materiality of objects and develop skills in critiquing cultural meanings
- LO3. Understand the technical and social issues associated with objects from a historiographic perspective
- LO4. Build and test key analytical skills required to discuss museum objects
