This unit explores key transformations across modern Western art. With a focus on the landscape, portrait and still life genres, we will study what happened to these genres both leading up to the key transitional period of the 17th century and beyond. At the same time, to better situate the modern, we consider the changing relations between artwork and viewer. From absorption and devotion to curiosity and distraction, attention will be paid to the viewing experiences artworks create and/or respond to across different historical periods.
