This unit enables postgraduate students to cultivate material focused creative fluency in the generation and representation of design and architectural concepts. Working with two interdisciplinary practitioners in weekly alternating studio sessions, students will explore a broad range of hands-on techniques in clay modelling and casting, complemented by small-scale constructions incorporating wood, metal, and plastic. Through experimentation, analysis, and comparative evaluation of different processes, students will critically investigate how techniques can be articulated, combined, and applied through making, using material practice as a mode of inquiry and design thinking. Emphasising learning through doing, the unit encourages students to develop an understanding of how ideas emerge, evolve, and are tested through material engagement. Framing the course as a platform for research and creative inquiry, students will develop a final design project that integrates material exploration with a conceptual rationale and an accompanying research report.
