2022 unit information

This unit of study provides a critical introduction to health at work in the Australian and international contexts. It examines the nature, prevalence, origins, and management of disease and injury in the workplace. Topics covered include the distribution and impact of occupational injury, ill health and disease in Australia; different perspectives on occupational injury and disease causation; the effects of psychosocial factors and work organisation, and the roles of professionals, managers and workers in prevention and management.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Understand the impact of major changes in the workplace, including demographic ageing and an increase in precarious employment, on workers’ health.
  • LO2. Have a broadly based understanding of the nature, prevalence and causes of work-related injury, illness, and disease.
  • LO3. Understand, and be able to critically evaluate, contributions to work, health and safety (WHS) from different disciplines.
  • LO4. Be able to apply a multidisciplinary approach to understanding and addressing WHS problems.
  • LO5. Have gained a critical understanding of the contributions of regulatory bodies, management, workers and trade unions to the prevention and management of WHS.
  • LO6. Have developed research skills in literature search, data access and report writing in WHS.
