Indoor environments directly affect how people work, learn, rest, and gather inside buildings. These conditions are not background to architecture; they are direct outcomes of design decisions about form, materials, openings, services, and operation. Yet they are often made without explicit attention to how they shape the experience of occupants. This unit develops your capacity to design buildings for the people who use them. Working across the interconnected dimensions of indoor environmental quality, you will learn to read indoor environments, diagnose how they perform, and develop design responses that integrate occupant comfort, health, and wellbeing with broader sustainability ambitions. Through case studies of exemplary sustainable buildings, hands-on engagement with the School's environmental laboratories, a Sydney CBD site visit, and contemporary performance rating tools, you will build the design judgement to make and defend choices about how a building performs for its occupants. The unit builds on the sustainability framing in BAEN1012, the empirical foundations in BADP1001, and the sensory grounding in BADP2003. It supports pathways into the Master of Building Performance and Sustainable Design and into professional practice roles focused on healthy, sustainable, high-performance buildings.
