Unit of study_

BBHE1003: Biomolecular Components of the Human Body

2026 unit information

This unit provides foundational knowledge for human physiology by introducing essential concepts from biology, chemistry and physics, and demonstrating their application to physiological processes. The key topics include molecular interactions, energy metabolism, equilibrium, fluid dynamics, and radiation, all introduced from first principles and applied to medicine. Students will learn how these concepts relate to human body systems, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary systems, with a focus on maintaining homeostasis. The unit will equip students with the scientific principles necessary to understand physiological processes and their relevance to health and disease.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Describe fundamental principles in chemistry and physics as they relate to human physiology.
  • LO2. Describe and apply foundational concepts of chemistry and physics to explain mechanisms underlying bodily functions and their relevance in homeostasis and clinical practice.
  • LO3. Describe and apply introductory skills in collecting, analysing, and interpreting scientific data from laboratory experiments and case studies to assess physiological adaptation to different physical, environmental, and pathological conditions.
  • LO4. Describe and apply preliminary scientific inquiry skills to analyse and evaluate physiological responses to environmental and pathological stressors, using principles of chemistry and physics to assess the body’s adaptation.
  • LO5. Recognise and apply collaborative interactions with peers to demonstrate the development of communication, problem-solving, and reflection while fostering a culture of respect, inclusivity and professionalism.

Unit availability

This section lists the session, attendance modes and locations the unit is available in. There is a unit outline for each of the unit availabilities, which gives you information about the unit including assessment details and a schedule of weekly activities.

The outline is published 2 weeks before the first day of teaching. You can look at previous outlines for a guide to the details of a unit.
