Unit of study_

BBHE2011: Body Defences: Infection Inflammation Immunity

2027 unit information

This unit will provide an introduction to the fundamental concepts of immune defence and immune homeostasis, including the basic components of the immune system. It will cover the structure (anatomy), function (physiology) and commensal microorganisms (immunology) of the barrier systems, including the integumentary (skin) system, and mucosal surfaces, including the oral cavity, the lungs and gut. It will then introduce different pathogens, how they trigger the activation of the immune system, their consequent role in infectious diseases and how these can be mitigated through vaccination and antimicrobial agents. The unit will also take an applied approach, providing examples of non infectious disease states that involve the immune system, such as inflammatory bowel diseases and autoimmune diseases.
