Unit of study_

BUSS1102: Accounting and Finance for Business Decisions

2027 unit information

This unit develops the foundational knowledge and analytical skills required to use accounting and financial information to support business decision-making. Students examine the structure of businesses and the business environment in which organisations operate, providing a framework for understanding how firms undertake and record economic activities through business transactions. Building on this foundation, students learn how business transactions accumulate into key financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets and cash flow statements, which provide information about organisational performance, financial position and liquidity. The unit also develops quantitative skills through the study of the time value of money. These concepts are applied to capital budgeting, where students evaluate investment decisions related to the assets of the firm and assess how organisations allocate financial resources to long-term projects. Students then examine how these investments are financed by analysing the roles of debt and equity in the capital structure of a firm. In doing so, they consider how financing choices are reflected in the balance sheet and explore the distinction between the book values reported in financial statements and the market values of financial securities. By linking business transactions, financial reporting, investment decisions and financing choices, the unit equips students to interpret financial information and evaluate how firms make and fund key business decisions. This provides a foundation for further study in accounting, finance and related business disciplines.
