2026 unit information

This unit aims to supply students with an introduction to military affairs and the conduct of war. It considers the complex relationship between politics and strategy and examines strategic thought, the application of land/air/space/naval power and military technologies. It applies this knowledge to interactive case studies before proceeding to investigate more contemporary strategic problems such as the revolution in military affairs, new wars, and counter-terrorism and counter-insurgency.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. acquire and use building blocks of the security sub-field: Specialized professional concepts, specific theories and methods prevalent in the field of international security
  • LO2. demonstrate improved reading skills with enhanced capacity for criticism, integration and association of readings to broader debates and empirical discussions in the field
  • LO3. apply acquired concepts and theories to the analysis of current security problems, issues and events
  • LO4. engage in applicative analysis in the domain
  • LO5. demonstrate improved the theoretically-based oral explanations of current security situations
  • LO6. demonstrate improved professional writing skills, including proper presentation and application of theory
  • LO7. muster key concepts and theories in the field of international security and associate these with paradigms and scholars
  • LO8. analyse theory and events in a critical manner
  • LO9. access, organise and communicate applicable knowledge in both written and oral forms.
