CMPN4666: Advanced Analysis

2025 unit information

This unit is designed to equip students with a working knowledge of current music theory and analysis practice, impart analytical skills that can be applied across a broad spectrum of activities and different musical genres and types, and develop an understanding of related concepts such as what analysis actually is, different types of analysis (functional, descriptive, surface, aural/perceptual vs. score based) and an understanding of working at different levels of abstraction.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. Critically engage with analytical details of a piece of music, by through applying different analytical tools to musical works.
  • LO2. Consider analytical details in terms of large-scale structural considerations.
  • LO3. Consider how analysis is informed by broader contexts, including the cultural and historical backgrounds of composers and performers.
  • LO4. Generate original analytical insights into a diverse range of 20th- and 21st-century repertoire.
  • LO5. Communicate analytical findings effectively through written, oral, discursive, and graphical means.
  • LO6. Select and apply an appropriate analytical framework for a selected final work, demonstrating methodological awareness and critical reflection.
