This unit will equip students with the knowledge and skills to support communication development in early childhood. Students will explore and apply key early intervention principles and theories, and apply intervention techniques to foster language, speech, fluency, and voice development in young children. Emphasis is placed on measuring and reporting intervention outcomes to ensure accountability and effectiveness. Through practical activities students will critically examine the diverse factors that shape clinical decision-making, such as a child’s physical, social, emotional, and cognitive abilities, alongside the family’s cultural background and environmental context. Case-based learning will highlight the varied roles of speech pathologists across early childhood settings, encouraging students to integrate theory with practice. Preventive interventions designed to optimise developmental outcomes across the community will also be addressed. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to apply reflective, evidence-based, and culturally responsive practices that enhance communication outcomes for children in the early years and strengthen partnerships with families and communities.
