DENT5045: Management of Children's Special Needs

2024 unit information

This important aspect of Paediatric Dentistry is covered in detail, with special reference to the inter-disciplinary nature of diagnosis and treatment of medically compromised and special needs children. Trainees must become proficient in the management of children with many conditions, including congenital cardiac disease, haematological disorders, immunodeficiencies, malignancies, endocrinopathies, respiratory diseases and neurological disease. They must also develop the knowledge and skills to provide high quality care to children with intellectual and physical disabilities.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  • LO1. demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the pathogenesis, clinical presentation, tests used in diagnosis and treatment, and prognosis and management of the disorders covered in this unit
  • LO2. demonstrate awareness of the implications for dental treatment and long-term dental health in children with the conditions listed in this unit
  • LO3. demonstrate proficiency in the dental management of children with the conditions listed in this unit
  • LO4. demonstrate an understanding of the importance of interdisciplinary management of these children
