DENT5233: Behaviour and Dental Management 2
This course gives students knowledge and skill in the management of medically compromised patients and covers this important aspect of dentistry in detail, with special reference to the multi-disciplinary nature of diagnosis and treatment of medically compromised patients. It covers the implications for dental treatment in patients ranging from the child to the geriatric patient with cardiac, respiratory, neurological, oncological and other special needs.

At the completion of this unit, you should be able to:
- LO1. outline the models of health behaviour and belief and understand psychology as it relates to the person and health
- LO2. understand the emotional experience of living with disability, chronic health condition and coping with situations such as transition of age and loss
- LO3. recognise aspects of both verbal and non-verbal communication relating to pain, anxiety and phobia in patients requiring special needs dentistry
- LO4. identify pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods that can be used to manage pain, anxiety and phobia in patients requiring special needs dentistry
- LO5. understand and demonstrate clinical proficiency in the management of patients with special or additional needs via non-pharmacological behavioural management
- LO6. understand and demonstrate clinical proficiency in the management of patients with special or additional needs via the use of pharmacological adjuncts such as relative analgesia, oral and intravenous sedation and general anaesthesia
- LO7. acknowledge the impact of impairment, disability and social exclusion on oral healthcare planning, and demonstrate competency in utilising the appropriate clinical care pathways and coordinate an inter-professional team to deliver individualised oral health care plans
- LO8. understand and demonstrate competency in assessing an indvidual’s capacity to consent and understand the role of the family and caregivers in assisted decision making
- LO9. understand and demonstrate respect for patient autonomy and apply appropriate rationale for the use of physical and pharmacological intervention
- LO10. understand and demonstrate the use of effective communication strategies in the healthcare setting to develop meaningful interaction with people according to their specific needs
- LO11. understand and utilise communication strategies that encourage patient autonomy and participation, in partnership with families and caregivers where appropriate
- LO12. understand and design acceptable comprehensive treatment plans in the appropriate setting according to individual characteristics, risk, local guidelines and protocols
- LO13. understand and apply the evidence base to develop oral health care plans to stabilise and maintain oral health in people requiring special needs dentistry
- LO14. coordinate an interdisciplinary team including allied oral healthcare professionals in the delivery of optimal clinical care for people requiring special needs dentistry
- LO15. understand and demonstrate the ability to work with caregivers and residential care homes to prevent oral disease
- LO16. demonstrate interprofessional communication with medical teams to gather information and integrate oral risk assessment into key stages of medical care pathways
- LO17. confer and collaborate in a professional manner with different dental specialities and refer to other specialists regarding treatment options outside of individual scope of practice
