This comprehensive unit explores craniofacial development, anatomy, histology, and pathological conditions, providing foundational principles of maxillofacial pathology. Students will examine tooth development, eruption processes, and the anatomy of critical structures, including the tongue, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), jaw, salivary glands, and the head and neck lymphatic drainage patterns. The curriculum enhances the ability to distinguish normal mucosa and skin based on histological features and regional variations while covering the composition, structure, and functions of connective tissue and bone. Additionally, it delves into the mechanisms of inflammation, wound healing, and neoplasia. Students will also study diverse pathological conditions such as tooth abnormalities, inflammatory and giant cell lesions, metabolic and genetic diseases of the jaws, granulomatous conditions, and maxillofacial infectious diseases. The unit provides a comprehensive overview of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections in the oral and maxillofacial region, emphasizing microbiology, histopathology, and clinical manifestations. By integrating these concepts, students will gain a holistic understanding essential for assessing, diagnosing, and managing common maxillofacial pathologies and infectious diseases. Upon successful completion, students will demonstrate fundamental knowledge of craniofacial development, histology, basic pathology, and selected maxillofacial pathologies, including infectious diseases in the oral and maxillofacial region.
